Medical and Dental Care

There are usually three Medical Missions each year. Each medical mission has a team of about 25 local Physicians, Dentists, Nurses, Pharmacists and “Ancillary” helpers” that will provide health care to between 400 to 700 patients. The ancillary help is made up of patient intake, data entry into our own medical records system for our nursing triage process and transporting our elderly . These mission trips will have four full days of patient care that take place in local clinics supported by Sister Parish. In addition, about 750 children receive dental care.
Our Mission Team works with medical and dental students from Santo Domingo’s UNIBE Medical and Dental school, along with volunteers form the local Parishes. Many of our ancillary volunteers have gone on to become physicians and nurses based on
their mission experience.

Nutritional and Emotional Support to the Elderly

Every month, Sister Parish local volunteers ( EL Equipo) visit and provide daily snacks and beverages for approximately 120 elderly residents ( “los Ancianos”) in El Mamey and Guerra. Twice a month, each of the Ancianos will also a ration of sufficient food, over-the-counter medicines and housing supplies to meet their daily needs. EL Equipo will also help clean their simple dirt floor homes and check on their health. In addition,
we provide aid of food and clothing to Hogar San José, a Hospice in Guerra run by the Sisters of Charity. Whenever we have a Family or School Mission, our missionaries will spend a ½ day working with El Equipo and the Sisters of Charity in the care of the
elderly.

Pre-School

Established a pre-school and adult education classes in the Mamey Community Center

Beginning in the fall of 2014, the Ministry provided funding and equipment for daily pre-school classes for children under six years old. A head teacher and two assistants work with more than 20 children on skills from basic Spanish literacy to the importance of teamwork in the community. Evening classes in English and small business are taught twice weekly by Ministry volunteers.

Monique’s Threads of Love: Stitching Hope, One Thread at a Time

Founded in 2016, Monique’s Threads of Love began as a collaboration between a group of women in the Dominican Republic and mission travelers from the Sister Parish Ministry. With limited resources but abundant determination, these women used embroidery skills to create unique, handmade items that reflect their culture and craftsmanship.

With ongoing support from Sister Parish Ministry and local businesses in Jacksonville, Florida, the women expanded their abilities by learning to use sewing machines. This opened new opportunities to diversify their offerings—now including beautifully crafted bags and purses. For many of these artisans, these handcrafted products represent more than just artistry—they are a lifeline and their primary source of income.

From humble beginnings, Monique’s Threads of Love has grown into a powerful symbol of resilience, empowerment, and community. It offers these women a pathway out of poverty and the means to build brighter futures for themselves and their children. Every purchase plays a direct role in this mission: 100% of the proceeds go straight to the women who create each item.

Monique’s Threads of Love stands as a shining example of what can be accomplished through unity, creativity, and the unwavering desire for a better life.

Community and Infrastructure Improvements

Through early 2020 ( just before COVID), Sister Parish missionaries built the Community Center in El Mamey, and over 150 homes and 12 chapels in the greater Guerra area.
These were all part of our joint projects with local volunteers and our missionaries. Due to the rising cost of construction materials and scarcity of local general contractors, Sister Parish has now focused on maintenance and repairs of chapels, clinics, homes,
and schools. Each Family and School Mission trip will participate in two to three of these projects during their mission trip.
